Quarry Design

Quarries, whatever their size, can always have some beneficial afteruse. This may range from leisure or conservation interests to the development of former quarrying land for use as residential, commercial or industrial sites.

In conjunction with a group called quarryafteruse.info much research has gone into investigating a full range of planning, financial and technical issues that need to be addressed.

A recent bench-mark publication in which PGW&A was co-author was Quarries and Built Afteruses (ISBN978-0-9552346-06).

Many exciting new afteruse developments have been considered by PGW&A ranging from marinas and leisure parks to tiered housing, car parking and campus developments. One dimension stone operator is considering restoring a quarry so as to establish a new 21st Century farm building complex.

Quarry afteruse proposals are always best addressed when adjustments can be made to the design and operation of existing workings. Hence this is an issue of interest to quarry operators and to landowners.

Many of the thousands of existing, dormant and closed quarries in Britain, including dimension stone workings, could be beneficially developed in this manner.

PGW&A has extensive experience of working in this sector and developing linkages with developers, planners, architects and other disciplines. We can assist in managing schemes through from concept to completion.
